Dinner Benefit a Huge Success!

On Sunday February 21st the McKean County 4-H County Council teamed up with the CHAOS and Outdoor Adventurers clubs as well as other volunteers to hold a benefit dinner for Mackenzie Heyler. Mackenzie, the 18 month old daughter of Ed and Karen Heyler, suffers from retinoblastoma which is a rare form of cancer of the eyes. The youth and volunteers raised $1625 to go to the Heylers to help with medical and travel expenses to and from appointments. If you would like to help the family the County Council will be accepting additional donations at the following address:
County Council c/o Pam McFall PO Box 372 Smethport, PA 16749
We would also like to say thank you to Karen and Ed for all the years of service they have given to 4H and all of the community who showed their support through donations and attendance.

Out of State Swine for Market Projects

Memo from PSU: During a recent meeting with the Bureau of Animal Health administrators, Dr. Craig Schultz and Dr. David Griswold, we discussed the current regulations surrounding legal transporting of feeder show pigs into Pennsylvania. Pease be aware that these rules are currently under revision and may change at some point in the future.

In the meantime, please distribute these points to 4-H and FFA members who plan to purchase out-of-state pigs for 2010 county fairs and shows.

1. Pigs entering the state in small groups (show pigs) must be individually identified with a state-of-origin silver ear tag or a RFID tag.

2. Feeder show pigs originating from out-of state must be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued within 60 days of transport.

3. If pigs originate from a Pseudorabies (PRV) qualified herd, the herd number must be on the CVI, otherwise, pigs must have an individual PRV negative blood test within 30 days prior to transport.

4. If pigs originate from a Brucellosis-free state, no brucellosis test is required.

5. Pigs entering the state without a CVI and test (if necessary) are in violation of the law.

Any questions can be directed to the Bureau of Animal Health at PA Department of Agriculture.
