Entries will be accepted from November 1, 2011 to January 6, 2012. View contest details online at: http://documerica.challenge.gov/.

Finalists and the grand prize winner will be announced in February 2012. Finalists may be featured in an upcoming exhibit at the National Archives and a traveling exhibit with the EPA.

“Document Your Environment” contest categories are:
Graphic Art: This category covers any type of graphic art, including scans of paintings, photos, cartoons, photo mash-ups, etc. All entries must be sent as .jpgs, and high resolution (300 dpi) copies must be available.
Video: This category can include documentary-like videos and more artistic approaches to the contest. All entries must be less than two minutes in length. Videos must be uploaded to YouTube and entered into the contest with a link to the video.
Poetry: Any form of poetry is accepted in this category, but there is a 300 word limit to each entry. Poems must be submitted in either a PDF or Word doc format.

Contest judges include: Graphic Art category, former Documerica photographer and graphic artist Michael Philip Manheim; video category, Cokie Roberts, author and news analyst for National Public Radio and ABC News; and Poetry category, Sandra Alcosser, the first Poet Laureate of Montana and professor of poetry at San Diego State University. Of the nine finalists, one grand prize winner will be chosen by the Archivist of the United States, David S. Ferriero.

Documerica
In the 1970s, the EPA commissioned freelance photographers to capture images relating to environmental problems, EPA activities, and everyday life in the seventies. This project, called Documerica can now be found at the National Archives, which has digitized more than 15,000 images. Today, the EPA has continued the spirit of Documerica with their recent photo project, State of the Environment. EPA put out a global call for photos that document our environment today. The EPA photo project kicked off on Earth Day 2011 and will continue accepting submissions until Earth day 2012. The winning photos may also be featured, along with the National Archives "Document Your Environment" winners, in an upcoming exhibit at the National Archives and a traveling exhibit with the EPA.

Documerica Photos on National Archives Flickr photostream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/usnationalarchives/collections/72157620729903309/
Documerica photos online in National Archives Online Public Access (OPA):http://research.archives.gov/search?expression=parent-id-lnk%3A542493+lod-display-lnk%3AItem&pg_src=brief&data-source=selected-archival-data-records&data-source=archival-descriptions-with-digital-objects
Environmental Protection Agency's State of the Environment Project: http://blog.epa.gov/epplocations/

Sunday's State Show Placings

Final Update from the State Show, placings today:

Alexis Morse – 10th place, Western Pleasure Ponies, 13 h & under

Jenna Gabreski –7th place, Western Pleasure Horses, Sr. Rider

The show is over and everyone is heading home. Over the past few weeks Potter County has experienced a very hot and dry weather spell. This may seem like great weather for summertime fun, but for those 4-H and FFA members who have Market Swine projects it has been a nightmare. To explain, pigs DO NOT have sweat glands. This means that they have a very difficult time keeping cool. When any animal gets too hot, it is in their nature not to eat. For this reason it is important to manage your hog’s body temperature during the summer’s brutal heat. I have included a few practices that will help you keep your pig cool and, at the same time, gain weight for the Potter County Fair.
Cooling Practices for Hogs Outdoors:
1. ALWAYS KEEP CLEAN WATER AVAILABLE (Most Important)
2. Be sure that there is some sort of shade in the pen (Hanging a tarp will do just fine)
3. Make a mud bath (This acts as the pig’s natural sun screen)
4. Hose the pigs down with cold water multiple times a day (Helps to prevent mud stains)
Cooling Practices for Hogs Indoors:
1. ALWAYS KEEP CLEAN WATER AVAILABLE (Most Important)
2. Hang a box fan to create air circulation (Just like you do at the Fair)
Weight Gaining Practices for ALL Hogs:
1. Make Corn Mash with cold water or sour milk
• Corn Mash is made by adding cold water to your hog’s powdered corn meal until the mixture is an oatmeal consistency; this can be done with pellet feed as well
• To get sour milk go to your local grocer and ask for milk that is either spoiled or slightly out of date; this makes the mash more tasty for the pig
2. When making Corn Mash add either cheap maple syrup, vegetable oil, or sugar purchased from the dollar store as this makes the Corn Mash a sweet treat for the pig to eat!
3. Make Corn Mash three or more times a day (Morning, Noon, and Night)
4. Be sure to use the Cooling Practices listed above
Remember, keep your pig cool and comfortable and they will eat. Hogs can gain up to 2-3 lbs. per day. So if you feel that your market project is going to be close to the 210 lbs. weight requirement then follow the practices listed above. Good luck and see you at the Fair!

New- Jr. Swine Production Class at Farm Show

The Pennsylvania Farm Show Commission has approved an additional class to the 2012 Farm Show Junior Market Swine Show. Pigs entered in the new Jr. Swine Production Class will be delivered to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Livestock Evaluation Center (near Pine Grove Mills, PA) as feeder pigs in between September 25 and October 2, 2011. The class will allow junior exhibitors to deliver 1 to 4 hogs to the competition where standard feeding in the same barn will allow comparisons of growth and meat production between the hogs. At the end of the test one hog per exhibitor is eligible for showing in a new production class at the 2012 PA Farm Show. Participants in this class may show a second non-test hog in another class. At the conclusion of the testing period, exhibitors must arrange to have pigs picked up from the Livestock Evaluation Center between January 4 and January 7, 2012.

Exhibitors may exhibit a single Production Class pig at the Farm Show in addition to their traditional Jr. Market Swine Entry. Production Class pigs will be automatically entered in the on-foot competition in the Jr. Market Swine Show and the winner of the Production Class will be eligible to compete for Grand Champion. In addition, pigs in the Production Class will be eligible for Lean Gain Per Day premiums calculated from a combination of growth rate and carcass composition as determined by ultrasonography.

Entry fee is $25 per pig. Exhibitors will be responsible for actual feed costs, as well as testing costs accrued by the Livestock Evaluation Center. The total estimated cost per pig is approximately $150. This new class will place a renewed emphasis on production characteristics. Entry is first come, first serve and space is limited to 24 participants. Entry forms for the Jr. Swine Production Class are available from the Pennsylvania Farm Show (717) 787-2905.

Penn State Dairy Days Cow Camp

This year's Penn State Dairy Days Cow Camp is scheduled for May 20-22 at University Park. The course, The Forest Resources Institute for Teachers (FRIT) - Town and Country Unit, provides 1st - 7th grade teachers the information and educational tools needed to teach a balanced environment and ecology curriculum related to Pennsylvania's renewable natural resources.

FRIT is a professional development opportunity for educators. It is organized through Penn State's School of Forest Resources, as a program of Penn State Extension. The course will acquaint educators with the rural and community forest resources of Pennsylvania, and ways to connect youth to the natural world. According to Sanford Smith, Extension Specialist, "We take pride in our summer course offerings and develop courses that are immediately helpful to teachers when they return to the classroom in the fall. This is a learning experience designed for: teaching professionals, pre-service education students, curriculum specialists, and educators from environmental centers and conservation districts." One PDE Credit / "IU Credit" and Non-credit registration options are available.

FRIT will be staged twice this year. First at Penn State University, University Park, PA (June 22-23, 2011) and the following week at the Penn State Extension Office in Allegheny County, Pittsburgh, PA (June 29-30, 2011). We are the first brick building, parking is in the back.

Lion Head Rabbits

Lisa Mann from Galeton who would like to give away 5 lionhead rabbits. There will be three awards in each of the first 5 categories totaling $1250.00. The Special Youth Category will have a single prize of $50. The categories are explained on the application.

Last year the LHR received over 150 photos from all over the 15 county region from photographers as far away as Maine and Florida. “It was very difficult to choose the winners,” said LHR executive Director Mike Wennin, “as the quality of the photos was amazing.”

Applications and information are available on their website at www.lumberheritage.org. If you do not have access to the internet, phone them at 814-486-0213 and the forms will be mailed to you. Last year’s winners are also posted on the website.

The contest deadline is October 12th. Keep your camera at your side this summer as you experience the wonders of the Lumber Heritage Region and the beauty of the Pennsylvania Wilds.

Basic Dog Obedience Workshop

Tues., May 18, 25, June 1, 8, 15, 22
Potter County Extension Office
5:00 PM and 6:00 PM (10 dogs per class)
Bring a 6 ft. lead and choke collar or collar of their choice
Proof of vaccination
Instructor has the right to reject any aggressive dogs!
Dogs should be 6 months or older!
Registration Fee: 40.00/dog
Call the Extension Office to register 274-8540

MAPLE FESTIVAL PARADE!!!

MAPLE FESTIVAL PARADE!!!
Dear Friend,
The Maple Festival Parade reflects all aspects of Potter & Tioga Counties,
from antique cars and 4-H Clubs to the DOT litter bug! I’m sure you would agree
that a “great” parade is one that is colorful and comes to life through the
imagination of our own residents.
Participating in the 2010 Potter – Tioga Maple Festival Parade is a cost
effective means by which our local businesses, service clubs, schools and families
can promote themselves, while also contributing to the sense of belongingness for
which rural counties like Potter are known.
We believe so strongly in this concept that each year the Maple Festival
committee allocates a portion of festival proceeds directly to the participants in the parade; depending on the number of marchers and/or type of parade display.
So come join us at one of the County’s most attended events of the year, the
Maple Festival, by returning your Parade Registration form no later than April
23rd! Believe! Achieve!” This theme for the weekend gave nine Potter and McKean County 4-Hers a lot to think about as they departed from the Regional 4-H Teen Retreat at Seven Mountain Scout Camp. The impact of two short days was quite phenomenal for them and the 4-H members who joined them from the Central Region. Shelby Baker, Karli Haskins, Nick Ayers, Emily Cormier, Caleb Cooper, Chris Borland, Stephanie McFall, Aaron Strait and Sandra Shaffer gained knowledge, skills and relationships that will stick with them for years to come.
The retreat kicked off on the evening of Friday, March 19th with Keynote Speaker, Dr. Mark Brennan, Professor of Leadership at Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Brennan provided the youth with a motivational talk about how they should step up and take the lead in their clubs and communities. This was followed by Ice Breakers with the Penn State Collegiate 4-H and a late snack before retiring to their lodge.
The following day’s workshops ranged from Parliamentary Procedure, to Questing, to learning how to promote 4-H. They even had the opportunity to get makeovers, learn how to line dance or learn about wildlife. Dinner for the evening was semi-formal, complete with fancy place settings and entertainment from the Penn State Pennharmonics. Then, many of the teens participated in a Cultural Presentation of two students from the Penn State Saudi Arabian Student Association. The night concluded with dancing and games.
The departure on Sunday, March 21st was more of a challenge than most expected. They had gained friendships that none of them were ready to leave behind. However, they did take with them the skills and knowledge they had gained over the weekend. Each teen returned to their counties with more confidence and poise than what they arrived with on Friday.

Alfred University's Spring Open Horse Show on May 1st & 2nd, 2010

Alfred University's Horse Show Management Class is sponsoring the show (with help from professors and directors). The show will be held at the Alfred University Equestrian Center at 5174 Lake Road, Alfred Station NY 14803. May 1st is the Western show, May 2nd is the English. Joseph Boyle and Theresa Wills will be judging respectively. There will be prizes, payback classes, and highpoints awarded. The show is also PAC approved. No pre-entries are necessary, all entries will be accepted the day of the show. Stabling is available on a first come first serve basis, so the sooner you let us know, the more likely it will be that you secure your stalls. This is an excellent opportunity to show at an outstanding facility; and the show will be held rain or shine because of the large indoor arena available. Attached are the classes for both the English and Western day.

All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfasts

It’s that time of the year for Brydonson Farm’s All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast to begin.

Pancakes are going to be served every Saturday from 8 to 2 pm starting March 13th and March 20th and both Saturday and Sunday March 27th and 28th for the Maple Open House weekend. How do you get programs or meetings started with everyone involved and no one feeling left out? We will show you how! You will leave with a list of ideas to try at your next 4-H meeting or program.

11-12 Option 1- Club Officer Training- The 4-H club model is that all 4-H clubs have a set of club officers who run the club business meeting and help to determine what will occur during the 4-H year. This training will teach clubs how to use the officer positions and teach the youth what each officer does.

Option 2- Communicating Effectively- Getting in front of an audience can be challenging. Pease be aware that these rules are currently under revision and may change at some point in the future.

In the meantime, please distribute these points to 4-H and FFA members who plan to purchase out-of-state pigs for 2010 county fairs and shows.

1. Pigs entering the state in small groups (show pigs) must be individually identified with a state-of-origin silver ear tag or a RFID tag.

2. Feeder show pigs originating from out-of state must be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued within 60 days of transport.

3. If pigs originate from a Pseudorabies (PRV) qualified herd, the herd number must be on the CVI, otherwise, pigs must have an individual PRV negative blood test within 30 days prior to transport.

4.
